From Imprinters to Innovation: The Evolution of Payments

The payments industry has come a long way since the 1960s. Many of us remember hearing stories about our parents walking into a store, presenting a credit card, and watching the clerk place it into a manual imprinter—often called a “knuckle-buster.” The transaction was then completed with a phone call to obtain an authorization code.

Then, in 1984, Verifone introduced the ZON Junior, helping transform the industry by bringing electronic payment processing to the merchant countertop.

From there, innovation accelerated. We saw the Verifone's Tranz 330 and Tranz 380, the T420 and T460, followed by products from Hypercom and Lipman.

But technology wasn't the only thing changing. Security became a defining priority.

With the introduction of PCI compliance requirements, the payments industry entered a new era. Merchants could no longer think of payment acceptance simply as having a credit-card terminal on the counter. Security, encryption, compliance, fraud prevention, and protecting cardholder data became essential parts of the payment ecosystem.

And that evolution continues today with Sunrise offering the best-in-class countertop terminals, secure payment gateways, Clover point-of-sale systems and mobile devices, and customized point-of-sale systems all safe and secure! Call us today!
